This week two paintings by Camille Pissarro have been added to our Ode to Spring exhibit. The images come from the Metropolitan Museum of Art as do the notes here.
The detail view here is from “Côte des Grouettes, near Pontoise“. This painting shows a patch of purple flowers at the lower left adding a sprightly note to this canvas, which probably dates to the spring of 1878. Featuring strollers on a path, it is typical of Pissarro’s views of Pontoise and its surroundings, almost all of which show the peasants who worked the land or lived in the village. Pissarro painted in the region for almost two decades, beginning in 1866.
The other work is “Poplars, Éragny“. That canvas, from 1895, shows a corner of Pissarro’s garden at Éragny, a small village in northern France where he lived from 1884 until his death. Pissarro likely painted this view from his studio window, as a persistent eye ailment hampered him from working outdoors.
